Which surfskate should you get? A 2022 guide.
Surfskates have become increasingly popular over the last few years. You’ve probably had a friend asking you to join them in their latest surfskate adventure as well! But I’m sure you’ve been wondering… which surfskate should you get?
There are many kinds of surfskates in the market. They differ from length, concave, shape, and truck systems. With so many variables, how do you pick the right one? In this blog post, you’ll learn how to pick the perfect surfskate for your riding style.
What do you want to achieve?
Before making your purchase, think about what you want to achieve with your surfskate. There are three main forms of surfskating:
- Cruising: Getting around on your surfskate while pumping
- Bowl riding, slides and tricks: Aggressive slides, pumping and riding in bowls
- Longboard surfskating: Pumping while dishing out dance moves
Cruising: Surfskate Cruisers
Cruising on a surfskate can be extremely fun. With super carvey turns, every ride will be a whole new experience for you. If you’re planning to use your surfskate mainly for cruising, they should have these characteristics:
- Mellow, gentle concaves for comfort
- Large wheels for grip and stability
- Decent grip for safety
With that in mind, we have some surfskates that fit the bill. Check out our Uluwatu, Canggu and Nalu surfskates!
Bowl riding and tricks
If you’re a daredevil looking to dish out slides and take on the bowl, you’ll need a deck designed for aggressive riding. Ultimately, the deck should keep your feet locked in place, and have a responsive turn.
- Deeper concave to lock your feet in
- Narrower wheelbase for sharper turns
- Large wheels for grip and stability
The Cloud 9 surfskate was designed with these in mind.
Pumping and dancing
If you want a mellower ride, and perhaps throw out a few dance moves, you’ll want a longer surfskate. Surfskates typically have a 17-18.5” wheelbase*, but you’ll need something longer. This will give you more space to move, and also a gentler turn so you don’t lose your balance while dancing.
* The wheelbase of a surfskate is measured by the distance between your front and back wheels.
- Wider wheelbase (25-27”) for dancing and mellower turns
- Large wheels for grip and stability
- Mellow concave for better balance
The Nalu V2 38” surfskate was launched for those seeking graceful turns and dancing on a surfskate. It has a mellow concave perfect for dancing, and a spray on grip which is gentle enough for bare feet sessions!
